Radio is catholic and non-proscriptive

I am sitting here in Buenos Airies waiting for a cab to the airport. The radio is on. It’s been on most of the time for the last 3 weeks. Here, in Uruguay and in Brazil.

In the last hour I have heard AC/DC, Tears for Fears, Dizzie Rascal, Iron Maiden, Abba, Crowded House, David Guetta and some fine dub reggae.

It occurs to me to mention that wherever I travel in the world – outside the UK – music fans are blissfully unaware of what they are meant to hate in order to be cool. Here it’s absolutely fine to say ‘I like Abba, Duran Duran, Rage Against The Machine, Madonna and Miles Davis.

Radio is catholic and non-proscriptive.

The cab is here. In 24 hours I will be back in London where I will be told that you must not like pop if you like indie, you must not like metal if you like R&B, you must not like The Saturdays or Lady Gaga unless you are a chav, and that Cheryl Cole is marvellous and deserves her success....
